Gatlinburg with young children

Jun 15, 2007  long weekend stopover on a visit to family
3.5 of 5 stars based on 6 votes

  • 1. Bearskin Lodge on the River Hotel
Bearskin Lodge on the River Hotel, Gatlinburg

Nice new hotel with small, but very nice, pool area. Nicely themed, clean, and well maintained.

  • 2. Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant

Average food at above average prices. Probably our least favorite dining experience on the trip.

  • 3. Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies
Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies, Gatlinburg

The kids and adults both loved this aquarium. The shark tank walk/ride-through was great. Lots to see (and not terribly crowded mid-day at this time of year). Plenty of interactive exhibits for the kids.

  • 4. Feeding Frenzy at Ripley's Aquarium

Food court food in the aquarium. Actually, the food was decent and not terribly overpriced.

  • 5. Hillbilly Golf
    Hillbilly Golf, Gatlinburg

A tradition... First time for the kids. Our son loved the ride up the mountain on the tram. Golf is rather ordinary, but the setting is worth it. The people who work there are very nice as well.

  • 6. Pigeon Forge Gem Mine
    http://www.pigeon-forge-attractions.com/mine.html

Our daughter enjoys gem mining, so we thought we'd stop. Problem here was that the smallest quantity they offered was a large bucket for $15. We were hoping for a small bag for $5 like we've done at other places. We'd have been there all day! We passed. The workers were friendly, though.

  • 7. 3 Bears Gift Shop
    http://www.pigeon-forge-attractions.com/3_bears.html

Cheezy souvenir shop. Kids wanted to see the bears, but we avoided going to see them in concrete cages. I'd pass...

  • 8. The Old Mill and General Store

  • 9. Pigeon River Pottery

  • 10. The Old Mill Pottery House Cafe and Grille
The Old Mill Pottery House Cafe and Grille, Pigeon Forge

The best soup we have ever eaten! Ate on the patio among the garden. Really nice setting. Good food at a not bad price. Service was a little slow, but the food and the setting made up for it. Highly recommend.

  • 11. The Creamery at Old Mill Square
    http://www.old-mill.com/shops_creamery

    Yummy ice cream!

  • 12. Old Tyme Portraits by Treadway
    http://www.oldtymeportrait.com/old_tyme_portraits.html

Our daughter really wanted to do this. We all had a good time...

  • 13. The Village
    http://www.thevillageshops.com/pages/default.html

Our favorite place to shop on the parkway...

  • 14. Legends by Max Restaurant

Our favorite dining experience of the weekend. Decent Italian lunch food, pretty good prices (kids were free with entree), staff was friendly.

  • 15. A & W Family Restaurant

    Root Beer floats! Yum!

  • 16. River Road Pancake House

Average pancake house. Missing the log cabin decor of most of the pancake houses, with a slightly rundown diner vibe, but the food was in decent portions and was not bad overall, and it is located right across the street from the Bearskin Lodge. Non-smoking is an added bonus.

  • 17. The Track
    The Track, Pigeon Forge

Kids loved the woody go-kart. Kid rides were OK as well.
