Fun Things to do along Highway 49 / California Gold COuntry
Be sure to go on the weekend as many of the demonstrations are not going during the week. The kids enjoyed walking through the town - especially the old dentist office.
What trip is complete without a train ride. Can be done the same day as Columbia State Park. Both are 1/2 day adventures.
3. Woods Creek Gold Mining Trip
Joshua Vic is an amazing guide as you spend the day panning and sluicing for gold. It's the real thing, digging through the mud by the river and using a sluice to extract the gold. You get to keep all the gold you find. We have gone twice and loved it both times. The scenery is beautiful as well. Be sure to bring a change of clothes and shoes as you get very muddy.
Ave price: $119

Greta service and a wonderful meal. Ate outside and people watched. Very nice evening.
6. Calveras Big Tree Park
A great alternative to Sequoia NP. The trees are impressive, nice walkways through the 2 groves and very little crowds. Bring a picnic and bathing suite as there are several places in the park to pull over and play in the river. There is a small river beach at one point.
Impressive cavern and they allow children of all ages, however, the stairs are very steep and can be slippery in parts.
Put on your hard hat and ride the tram into the gold mine. Very informative and interesting. The kids loved it. A side note - children under 3 are not allowed on the tour (as I found out after we got there, hubby and children took the tour and really enjoyed it).
9. Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park
A fun quick stop. Be sure to rent the walking tour audio set. There is a nice hiking trail there as well.
Reasonable price but a bit dated, good for families. Catch the train ride up to the Chinese cemetery.
Good local Mexican restaurant. Service was ver ygood and friendly and food was tasty.
Bring your bathing and wade in the river after exploring the area. Beautiful and peaceful. Nice hiking trails.
