1. Grand Canyon National Park (North Rim)
It is cooler and quieter on the North Side of the canyon and well worth the extra drive to get there. Stay in one of the historic log cabins near the rim and enjoy the log lodge as well. There are a lot of hikes that hug the edge of the rim and are great for kids. Rangers offer programs for families in the lodge in the evenings.
2. Bryce Canyon Lodge
These cabins are great with amazingly shingled roofs and gas fireplaces. Stay in the park and you can see the sunrise over Bryce canyon before breakfast. Hiking down in the hoodoos is great fun for kids.
3. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park
The huge trees make for great pictures. You can also hike to a scenic overlook and see for miles.
4. Yosemite National Park
We approached the park from the south and visited the overlook area first before seeing the valley floor the next day. Don't miss the islands in the middle of the river- they are a great place to find shade, and cool breezes on a hot day.
5. Arches National Park
This park is hot in the summer, but if you hike back into the shadow of the rocks to see formations it is much cooler.
6. Rocky Mountain National Park
Beautiful. We did this one as a driving tour stopping just at a visitor center for some information.
7. Mesa Verde National Park
You can take tours that go into the cliff dwellings and let you see everything up close. This was great for kids. We hiked a trail to see petroglyphs and the kids loved it.
