Some ideas for day trips around Las Vegas. Especially for the 'urban traveler' who cannot walk long distances and wants to optimize sightseeing from a vehicle ...
1. El Cortez Hotel and Casino

Ave price: $55
It was okay for a night's stay. While I cannot complain about the room or check in, I find the dim lighting of Las Vegas hotel rooms and casino very disconcerting. I liked this better than my stay at Imperial Palace. The check in staff were very helpful. Used valet parking without any problems.
2. Zion National Park
Parking inside the park is full when they say so. There are parking lots vailable right outside the park and shuttle stops in all these lots. It was warm even n the last week of April. It takes 2.5 hours to drive down to Zion from Vegas
We took the shuttle since they do not allow private vehicles from April through OCtober.Shuttle works well and I am glad I am helping the environment but I have to accept I would like to drive my own car preferably some convertible to enjoy the beauty of the canyon fully. These shuttles have openings in their roofs through which u get a nice view of the canyon walls.
This was our first stop in the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. The location is beautiful and they have a beautiful lawn and outdoor area where u can cool off from the heat and enjoy the scenery. I bought ice cream and yogurt which were average both in price and quality.
ALso known as Riverside walk this has to be the easiest trail in Zion. Also walking by the river and frolicking in it (if conditions permit) makes for a memorable experience in ZIon National park
same as above
Very scenic. In many ways more scenic than the canyon drive. The tunnel adds to the experience.
The best accomodation in our trip. Spotlessly clean and has all the ameneties u need. Disposable plates, microwave, fridge, 2 queen beds and a swing outside facing some great utah mountain scenery.
This was the best surprise of our trip. Beautiful blazing red formations and views. Do not miss the side road to Fire canyon. Has the best view of the park. We went during mid day but sunset would work better I think.
10. North Shore Drive
North shore drive from Valley of fire to Hoover dam is just not worth time spent
Extreme traffic especially on Sunday evenings. Had to turn back and miss it due to lack of time.
12. Lake Mead Cruises and Desert Princess
Alternate way to see Hoover Dam. It is ok for the time and money spent. WOn't however list it in the must do attractions in the area.
13. Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino

Ave price: $135
Long check in line and they gave us a room where u had to go across a casino take the elevator to the second floor, go across and take another elevator back to the first floor. Not fun and the room had a window facing another building. Was ok since we only stayed 1 night and paid only 50 bucks but no a great experience.
14. Las Vegas Casinos
Did some 'sightseeing' of Las Vegas casinos - New New York, MGM Grand, Bellagio fountains. DO NOT ATTEMPT to walk from MGM to Bellagio. It's a long way.
Nice location in the Hawaiian marketplace in the strip. Their food was good but pricey. They don't even give u free rice with their food and portions are small.
If view is of importance, this is the place. It was 9$ to go up ($6 for senior citizens) They make you walk through a whole bunch of shops before u step on the elevator to the tower. I must say a couple of those shops had cheap souvenirs. Reserve the shopping for when u come down so that u don't have to carry everything to the tower.
great food and attractive presentation with rice and bread (choice of naan/paratha)
