Things to do on Sunday in Lugano

Apr 29, 2007  Lugano on Sunday, like I said...
3.5 of 5 stars based on 2 votes

If you're ever in Lugano on Sunday you get it.

  • Category: Perfect day
  • 1. The Lakefront

Today is the day to sit and enjoy the lake. Stroll like the locals do. They call it passegiata.

  • 2. The SwissAlp Chocolate Factory

This place is in nearby Caslano. The factory doesn't operate but you can see it, shop to your heart's content and eat all the free chocolate you can at the tasting bar. The FLP train stops within walking distance.

  • 3. Como

There are a couple grocery stores open in Como on Sunday, so if you're new here and needing to do some grocery shopping it's pretty much across the border or the train station.

  • 4. FoxTown

Outlet shopping in Switaly! Yes, it is open on Sunday. A little different from the American outlet shopping experience. Try not to get lost...

  • 5. Great hiking from Carona

Last Sunday I met a couple of friends in Carona and we walked for three hours through forests and a botanical garden... it was beautiful. Go from Carona toward Vico Morcote on the marked hiking trails. You'll pass through the botanical gardens where someone planted an entire hillside of azaleas. Remarkable. It's a loop that winds up back in Carona, where there are plenty of cute little restaurants. The one right in the middle of town, run by sisters who sprint out the door with piping hot plates to the garden across the street... that's the best bet BY FAR. It is also open in the winter, though much of Carona shuts down.

  • 6. Walk to Gandria

I love to do this in the summer and take the boat back to Lugano.

  • 7. Churches

Check out your guide book -- Lugano's downtown is dotted with remarkable churches. One thing I love about them is that they're of so many different styles.

  • 8. Eat a pizza

On the lake next to the Hotel Walter is a place with yellow awnings. They make a mean rucola pizza. On the main piazza, Argentino does paper thin pizza locals love. Up in Gentilino there's a little neighborhood joint run by a Sicilian. His meats on the open fire are even better than his fabulous pizzas. It's called Balmelli's Ristorante.
