  • 1. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve
Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Honolulu, Oahu

Snorkeling is the best. See beautiful fish of all colors! We even saw pink and blue ones, black and white polka dotted ones, and bright colored rainbow ones! This place is awesome! Too bad the coral reef is destroyed : (. You have to see a short video before they allow you access to the bay. Admission (4/2007) is $5 USD per person. Parking is $1. Hours are 6 am - 5 pm. Get there early or else you will be turned away because parking gets full. The water is great, was not cold at all. Try not to touch the reef!

  • 2. Polynesian Cultural Center
    Polynesian Cultural Center, Laie, Oahu

Takes about 1 hour to get here from Waikiki. Great scenic drive, good to take a tour bus because whoever drives will miss out. Also tour buses point out historical sites and views as you go. It's also best to get a guided tour when at the center or else you might get stuck walking around wondering what you are looking at. We got the Luau package and upgraded to a guided tour for $10 USD per person when we got to the center. The Luau had a great all-you-can-eat buffet, but it is not an authentic luau we usually picture. You just eat on tables while there is entertainment on a main stage. The Horizons show is right after and should NOT be missed! It was the highlight of the visit and makes it well worth your money. People would pay $100 just to see this show alone, it's great!

  • 3. Dole Plantation
    Dole Plantation, Wahiawa, Oahu

Ride the train to see how a pineapple plantation looks. They also have the world's largest maze. To visit this place you only need about 3 hours, so consider stopping here on your way to/from the North Shore. Feed the fish at the koi pond. They come out of the water!

  • 4. North Shore
    North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii

Take a drive to the North Shore. If you get on Highway 83 along the way there are numerous picture spots and beautiful beaches. See the sunset on Sunset Beach- breathtaking! Turtle beach really had giant sea turtles on shore! Remember, it is almost impossible to get lost in Oahu unless you drive too far off from the highways. The island is a circle and you can drive around the whole outskirts of it in about 4-5 hours.
Also, try and eat at one of the Shrimp Trucks you'll see on the way. We stopped at one and had very tasty barbecued shrimp in sweet n' sour sauce with pineapple. Yum.

  • 5. Hawaiian Waterfall Hiking Adventure

This was so fun! Tour bus picks you up and points out historical sights of interest on the way. This one charges $42 USD per person and is 4 hours long, but there are others offered. You stop at the Pali cliffs for a great scenic view then go to your trail. The hike is moderate, don't pick this one if you have a bad back, knees, etc... You do walk uphill and it is slippery at times so you need good tennis shoes or boots. The destination is a beautiful waterfall in Oahu's rainforest. I took some amazing photos on this hike. Don't expect a big waterfall on this tour, but it is definitely a waterfall. The Manoa Waterfall is supposed to be bigger.
You could do this hike independently, but if I did I think I would have missed out on all of the interesting features pointed out by the tour guide like growing fruits, nuts, flowers, plants, and birds we saw. Plus, there are a few different trails connecting and there is a possibility of getting lost.

  • 6. Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor / WW II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, Honolulu, Oahu

Pearl Harbor is free. No charge for the parking or admission. DO NOT take any purses, camera bags, or fanny sacks of any kind, they won't let you in! If you get there very early (7 am) or later toward noon you could avoid a long wait to get to the memorial. What happens is you go inside, see the museum, look at the harbor and can read some the historical descriptions or listen with an audio tour, you see a mandatory short historical movie about what happened there, then you get on a ferry that takes you to the monument of the USS Arizona in the harbor in about 5 minutes. Lots of people take flowers from their leis and drop them in the ocean above the ship for tribute. I wish I would have known that before going because we had 3 that ended up wilting in the hotel room. Then you get the ferry back when you are done. After that you could go out to see the submarine or USS Missouri for a fee.
If you go on Saturday, Sunday, or Wednesday the Aloha Stadium swapmeet is located right across from Pearl Harbor and will be open until around 2 pm. They have lots of souvenirs for less. Prices are similar to the International Market Place in Waikiki, but there is no tax and you could bargain a lilttle. We walked there, but I wish we would have driven. It was about a 15 minute walk in the hot sun, then lots of walking when you get there, plus another 15 minute walk back.
When you are done with these great experiences, you will still have time for more Oahu adventures or relaxation!
