fun for spring break
fun city where our cruise departed from. lots to do in Old San Juan, but it's really fun just to walk around. the beach was really fun; there were huge waves!
2. Virgin Islands National Park
we docked in st. thomas, took a ferry from red hook and went to st. john and the national park. it was really worth it- the beaches were great, the hiking was great, the fish were great when snorkeling...so basically great. fyi the ferry ride was a little rough, but i like roller coasters.
this place was awesome! we got off, got a taxi driver (hazel- ask for him if you can!!) and he took us around the island. we went to the rain forest and saw trafalgar falls...up close (strenuous hike...but not if you just look from a distance) and swam in the pool. then we went around the island some more, tasted some fruit, cocoa beans, and then went snorkeling at Scott's Head marine preserve- amazing. we saw an octopus! visit hazel the taxi man @ rainforesttaxi.com
Barbados was pretty. we also took a taxi that took us around the island. Bridgetown really isn't that spectacular, but the countryside is really pretty but definitely not like Dominica or any other island...very much like the great plains of the US (with palm trees) interestingly enough. anyway, we were taken around the island to a fort, an old church that had great views, bathsheba where the beach has huge rocks and the surf is rough, then went snorkeling and saw a turtle. a pretty good day.
St. Lucia is beautifully lush, but unfortunately taxis are expensive here. since we docked in castries, one main thing we wanted to do was get down to the pitons and soufriere area, and the taxi was very expensive to get us there. we ended up taking a bus tour to soufriere and hot springs, and we understood why the trip was so expensive as it winds up and down and all around mountains and rainforest. the drive was really pretty- we tasted bananas grown there, got some banana ketchup and took in the views on the tour to soufriere, and then went to the baths. then we got food and a drink and took in the views of the pitons.
Antigua is an interesting island; much dryer than the others. we also took a taxi that showed us around the island, through the villages, to a lookout with great views of english harbor, and around until we came to a great beach. the snorkeling wasn't too great... not like the other islands, but we did see a flounder which was interesting.
7. The Ship: Carnival Destiny
A fun ship that had a waterslide! the food was excellent, the shows were entertaining, the gym facilities were good, and although the stateroom was small for 4, it was comfortable and mainly just for sleeping.
