  • 1. Berlin
    Berlin, Germany

A tremendous mixture of things to see & do. Serious culture, pop culture, 19th & 20th century history. Spectacular 18th, 19th & 21st century architecture. Easy to get to. Good public transport. A delight to walk around. Excellent spring & autumn city break territory. Go to the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag museum. Go to Potsdam further afield. My top city break recco

  • 2. Kiev
    Kiev, Ukraine

Amazing place to wander around & increasingly easy to get to since the abolition of visas for most Europeans. Excellent churches , good street markets. Go during the summer nights festival at the end of May when the city centre is shut off & becomes a party ground

  • 3. Heidelberg
    Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemberg

Great centre to stay in (check you can park your car at the accomodation). Tour around the area. Could do this during the summer- though it obviously gets crowded

  • 4. Rome
    Rome, Lazio

Beats the pants off Athens- ruins are often less ruined. Go for a Best Western hotel for something a bit more individual. Much more vibrant tha

  • 5. London
    London, England

Even (especially) if you are English there is so much to see & do here at the weekend. Walk around the deserted city of London, get a walking tour of the East End (NOT Ripper tours please!). Although I work in London & live just an hour out I would choose a day here rather than Paris, Brussels or Amsterdam every time
