Winter Fun in and Around Quebec City with the Family Including Valcartier and Ice Hotel
After a trying and very long travel day, we took a taxi to our hotel. My husband had stayed here 25 years ago and I had seen pictures. We typically do not pay this much for a hotel, but he insisted that we had to. It is truly a castle.
***
However, just walking to the taxi in the snowy weather was the beginning of our beautiful vacation. We drove through one of the most beautiful cities in North America. But, nothing can prepare you for the entry through the walls of the fort. You truly feel that you are traveling back in time. I'll never forget that feeling of the snow and going into the walls of Old Quebec with its small streets. Now you are in a different century and you come upon the castle that is where you are staying. Everyone is speaking French. It is truly magic.

Most "expensive" hotels make me feel like they are still ready to take all your money. Not with this one. They treated me so wonderfully. I woke up early to study in the lobby so I would not wake my family. They would get me coffee and would accept no tip. I apologized and they said "But we are here to serve you.". They were so kind and friendly with their sweet "Bon Jours" every morning. It was a very relaxed castle experience - not that I have had another.
**
Definitely take the tour of the Frontenac. It is very interesting to see the entire layout and hear the history.

Okay, this is quite expensive, but I could not imagine staying anywhere else there. This is close to everything you want to see. This was a huge part of our vacation. We stayed there three nights. Even if you stay one night, it is worth it.
We spent our first few days here in the old city. We walked everywhere. We were here to see the snow and that was not hard to find. We walked around looking at all the buildings and rode the Funiculaire (a device to get to the lower area) and basically just played.
**
One of the really neat things we did was the Terrasse Dufferin, which was a toboggan ride next to the Frontenac. We paid 2$ Canadien and hauled the toboggan up the stairs. A guy helped us get seated and then released us and we went down the slide. We could all three ride together or ride separately. It was really fun and a very simple pleasure.
We did not stay here, but stayed at the connected hotel. However, we took the tour. This is an amazing architectural gem! There was a wedding going on when we visited in the evening. We visited twice that day. My daughter loved the playroom with the ice slide.
This is the hotel and resort we stayed at while we visited the Ice Hotel. Even when one stays at the Ice Hotel, he or she has reservations here as well. This is basically a Four Seasons Hotel.
There are so many wonderful things to do here. The most unforgettable adventure is our dogsledding trip. We had booked it in our package. The check-in is on the premises and we were driven to a place close by where there were many dogs and trails. The dogs love to do this. It is so cute. The main dogsled guy, Simon, took us out and gave us a short lesson and we began. I instantly turned over the dogsled. It is basically a chair on skis. Anyway, he was with us and it was a wonderful experience. Our daughter chose to ride with Simon - smart girl. It was a beautiful ride in the country and a truly unique experience. There was also a sledding area that was clear cut. My daughter could not get enough of this. There were ski slopes and cross country and snow shoeing. We attended a sugar shack talk and had real maple syrup poured out on snow. I highly recommend this place.
This is a waterpark turned winterpark. See my review and others. This is too much fun!
This is a really sweet B and B that is very close to Valcartier Village. They prepare a really nice breakfast. There is a playroom in the basement that is wonderful with billiards. The rooms are nice and clean and the price can include a package with a trip to Valcartier.
