Santander for Foodies and Walkers

Mar 4, 2007  Missed my Malaga flight - so hopped on one to Santander! What luck.

Walk and eat - the best kind of holiday - oh, and drink too!

  • Category: Perfect weekend
  • Traveler type: Sightseeing, Active/Outdoors, Never been before
  • Appeals to: Seniors, Budget travelers, Tourists
  • Seasons: Winter, Spring, Fall
  • 1. Meson Leones, Calle Nicolas Salmeron

Great value eating place, especially the set lunchtime meal. Three courses for E 7.50 and the wine - a big jug, was free! Siesta needed afterwards. Choose the meat main rather than fish - merluza is boring. Salad starter great.

  • 2. Esperanza Fish Market

The best fish market in the universe! Don't miss it. So many varieties I wish I'd had a kitchen during my stay. And upstairs the cheeses are brill, and the chorizos.

  • 3. Feve Narrow Guage Railway

Do a short trip on the Oviedo route. Even if you only do a couple of hours then come back, it's well worth it. We left on the 9.10 am and due to lack of time, went 2 hours as far as Llanes, where we had some real cider in the nearest bar, then caught the train back half an hour later. You can almost pick the flowers as you travel - gorgeous trip.

  • 4. Rabas, the local tapas

Calamare strips, delicious with a squeeze of lemon.

  • 5. Vermouth

This is what the locals drink with tapas - it works. But watch out for mid town tapas bars - pricey - find back street places or near the fishing harbour. Or the termini, i.e. bus or train station cafes. Always great value.

  • 6. Harbour fish restaurants

Find the area by the real fishing harbour (not Puerto Chico) - about 500 yards down road behind the stations. Walk past the dry dock towards the flats. Great value. Superb fish.

  • 7. Royal Racing Santander

The local team is in the Premier (Football) League in Spain - La Liga - half way at the moment - and the great stadium is near Sardinero beach. Try to catch a game or at least watch one in a bar with the locals. Free tapas while you watch in some places. I wondered if you can do a tour of the stadium? I fancied a shirt.
