New Zealand the way it used to be

Feb 27, 2007  Getting away from the rat race
3.0 of 5 stars based on 1 vote

Waihau Bay is at the top of the East Cape of the North Island, after seeing the rest of New Zealand we decided to do the trip 'around the coast' from Opotiki to Gisborne. 334 kilometers of rocky foreshore, pristine beaches and spectacular beauty, no high rise, fast food chains or supermarkets just a winding spectacular drive for anyone who wants to really get away from it all. Waihau Bay is located almost 1/2 way along SH35 to Gisborne, it is a lovely safe white sandy beach ideal for swimming and Kayaking walking or hire a charter boat for a spot of fishing or diving. Just down the road is Whangaparaoa (Cape Runaway) where the two famous canoes first landed from Hawaiiki about 1350AD - the Tainui and the Arawa
