Visit Gumbo Limbo center to see some indoor and outdoor exhibits, see fish and turtles in their tanks. Visit the butterfly garden. Then walk the boardwalk through mangrove and papaya plants. Spend time watching boats on the intracoastal. Then climb the tower to see over the forest canopy (although it was depleted by Hurricane Wilma). $3 donation suggested. A tour is offered most Weds mornings at 10 am. Make sure you see the Gumbo Limbo trees - red and peeling, they're sometimes called "the tourist tree". http://gumbolimbo.org/
Sure, my honey said to me, of course I'll go with you to the septic treatment plant. But he was pleasantly surprised by the visit. This place was created to allow the treated water to recharge the aquifer - and the birds, and then the people, discovered it. It has a boardwalk that has some sheltered areas from sun and rain, but mostly serves as a wonderful viewing stand to watch a wide variety of birds, turtles, and a few alligators enjoy the rare fresh water and native plantings. Amazing. On a recent trip every parking spot was taken. Really. It's not your average septic treatment plant. www.dep.state.fl.us/ water/wastewater/ dom/wetwako.htm
Unfortunately closed in 2006 - 2007 because of debris from Hurricane Wilma. But check back in the future!
