The Breakers: The most impressive of the Newport mansions, this 13-acre estate received its name from the cherished view of waves crashing against rocks. The Italian Renaissance summer "cottage," whose construction included transporting European artisans to apply gold leaf and other artistic touches, was owned by one of America's most prosperous families, the Vanderbilts.
