Traveling from Columbus

There are two commercial airports serving Columbus-area residents.

Port Columbus International Airport (CMH), which is located 6 miles east of downtown, is the larger of the two airports. About a dozen airlines fly from CMH to destinations across the United States, plus Toronto and Cancun. The most popular destinations are Atlanta (AirTran Airways and Delta Air Lines), Chicago (American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines), Dallas-Fort Worth (American), Charlotte (US Airways) and Baltimore (Southwest).

Rickenbacker International Airport (LCK) is located 10 miles south of downtown Columbus. Currently, Allegiant Air is the only commercial airline operating from Rickenbacker. The airlines flies to Orlando and St. Petersburg-Clearwater, with seasonal service to Myrtle Beach and Punta Gorda.

Three Ways to Find Inexpensive Flights

Are you looking for cheap flights to cities such as Las Vegas, Tampa, Orlando, Miami or Fort Myers? Regardless of your destination, here are some tips for finding the most inexpensive airfares. First, don’t wait until the last minute. Airfares typically increase as the date of travel approaches. Second, be flexible about your choice of airlines and airports. Look at flights departing from both Port Columbus International Airport and Rickenbacker Airport, and consider alternative airports at your destination, as well. Finally, you’re most likely to get the cheapest airfares if your travel dates and times are flexible.

Planning Your Orlando Vacation

Orlando is a popular travel destination for those in the Columbus area. As you plan your trip, here are some important things to keep in mind.

There are two airports in the Orlando area: Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB). Allegiant Air flies from Rickenbacker to Orlando Sanford. Southwest flies from Port Columbus to Orlando International. (Delta also offers seasonal service to Orlando International.) Flying time from Columbus to Orlando is about 2 hours, 10 minutes.

Tourists flock to Orlando year-round, but the city sees more visitors—and hotel prices are higher—in March and April, from mid-June to mid-August, and from mid-December to early January. The slowest time of the year for tourism is during May, September, November and early December.

The region’s hottest weather is from June to September, and its coolest lowest occurs during the winter months. Before packing for your trip, check the weather forecast. And regardless of the time of travel, consider packing an umbrella. Also, keep in mind that Florida can be affected by hurricanes, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
