International flights to Holguin are served by Franc Pais Airport. However, direct Holguin flights come in from Havana, Varadero, and other major cities in the country. The area is not too crowded with tourists and will thus give visitors a chance to enjoy the scenery without too much hustle and bustle, unlike other places in Cuba. Airfare to Holguin is very affordable and will therefore provide you with the chance to spend more cash on souvenirs and gifts. Nevertheless, it is still a good idea to get cheap flights to Holguin by comparing rates from various airlines online.
Some of the places to visit are accessible by foot, but that depends on where you are currently located in the area. If you want to take in most of Holguin's beautiful scenery, the best option you have is to rent a car. Be careful choosing your rental car though. There are many cars for rent in Holguin, but most of them are quite old. If you plan to rent a jeep, make sure it is in good working condition. If you are looking to get to Havana or other cities in Cuba, you can easily just take the Viazul bus or the train rather than driving yourself.
If you want to have fun with nature's creatures, go for a Dolphin swim at the Bahia de Naranjo Nature Park or have a good swim at the Guardalavaca Beach or the equally enjoyable Playa Esmeralda. To get an outstanding view of the area, go to Loma de la Cruz (The Hill of the Cross). Alternatively, you can have a relaxing day at the Parque Calixto Garcia where you can enjoy the calming breeze, cool shades, and have fun with the locals. If you are an architectural or religious fanatic, head to the La Catedral de San Isidro or the Iglesia de San Jose. If not, try visiting the several museums that fill the area.
Holguin is not much of a shopping area as other popular tourist locations, but you can get a good shopping experience at the Club Amigo. Although most items have fixed prices, you can get bargains for rum. If you get hungry, you can recieve a good dining experience at the Los Alamos, the Paladar Adecuado, El Bosque, Cubanitas, and other excellent restaurants. For a shot of nightlife, head over to the Casa de la Trova, El Petalo, El Faro, and La Roca. While most of these bars are lively and full of activity, Casa de la Trova offers a calmer alternative.
