The Antonio Rivera Rodriquez Airport, also known as Vieques Airport, is just a small airport on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. The runway is being expanded so that small jet planes will be able to land here, opening the island to international Isla de Vieques flights. However, at the moment you will need to fly to other airports in Puerto Rico and get connecting flights to Isla de Vieques from there, or travel to the town of Fajardo in Puerto Rico where a ferry service can transport you to the island in around an hour. So your cheap flights to Isla de Vieques will probably need to go via the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan. You can either rent a car to travel from the airport or use the taxis, known as the publico system.
Due to limited infrastructure there is not much choice when it comes to transportation in the Isla de Vieques. The best way to travel around the island is by renting a car. However, it is best to pre-book or else you run the risk of not being able to find a car for your visit, as they are much in demand by the increasing number of tourists visiting the island. The main alternative is the publico taxi system.
Due to being a US Navy base for many years, the island of Vieques is relatively underdeveloped. This is part of its charm for the many tourists who now flock to its pristine white beaches and azure waters. Perhaps the main attraction of Vieques, though, is the bioluminescent bay, known as Mosquito Bay. This natural wonder is best viewed on a moonless night, when the whole bay will light up with glowing plankton. You can get a tour of the bay, either in boats or kayaks, and even have a night-swim in the glowing waters.
There are not many places for shopping on the island. The Caribbean Walk is a great gift shop, though, selling jewelry and handmade crafts that make great souvenirs. There are several good restaurants on the island serving local cuisine, such as El Quenepo. The Mufungo stuffed with seafood is a great dish to try. Nightlife is not extensive here, but there are a few bars worth visiting such as Banana's. This unique island will be an unforgettable experience that will justify the cost of airfare to Isla de Vieques.
