"This was recommended to us by locals. My wife and I stopped for a picnic and a swim on a warm late-Summer day. Really peaceful reserve with nice tramps, washrooms, and camping. The beach is stunning - beautiful sand, you can walk out into the magical blue green water for several hundred meters an..."d still not be over your head. What a magical spot - it's well worth an hour or two on your way to (or from) the Waipoa forest.

"One of those awesome little museums that are worth the trip.
Dargaville Museum is much cheaper than the Kauri Museum, at $12 for an adult. The money is not poorly spent.
Situated overlooking the magnificent Wairoa River, it houses a collection of important artifacts from people of local import..."ance as well as an extensive display on the local Kauri gum extraction industry.
There are hidden gems here and every room has something that will make you laugh if you have the patience to look for it (although some things, like the huge accordion collection, will be pretty obvious).
Make sure to grab a photo with the mast of the Rainbow Warrior while you're here.
Worth a stop if you're in town.
