"The weather was great for our trip, clear blue skies and hardly any breeze. There was approx 30 of us on the trip, which was a good number as there was still plenty of room on the boat. Just before we got to the island we were given a safety talk and each handed a hard hat and gas mask, we thought..." this was just for show - ha ha little did we know!
I have had both of my hips replaced so was a bit worried about getting onto the island as you have to transfer to a dingy and then climb up stairs onto the jetty and then very carefully walk over the rocks. "Whakatane River Walk is lovely and only few minutes walk from the town centre, pass the I Site. Really nice walk with some tables along the walk for picnic or lunch/dinner - really enjoyable.
Don't forget to have WALLY'S ON THE WHARF fish ~& chips while you there - they are the best in town! "
"Ohope Beach is stunning and I would say that it has the nicest beaches in New Zealand (north island). It is not as busy as the other touristy places and you can even find yourself a whole beach for yourself, just keep driving around! There are plenty of nice walks and great opportunity for photograp..."hers. I would highly recommend it to all that planning the trip this way, only 1 hour and 15 mins drive from Tauranga and its on the way to Opotiki and Gisborne that have amazing beaches too!
