Sassnitz Attractions: What to do & Places to Visit in Sassnitz
"A guided walk through the ancient beech forests offers a real insight into this unique ecosystem. Free regular tours are held between May and October and you can just turn up (book ahead off-season).
Check out dates, times and locations on the official park website: http://www.nationalpark-jasmu..."nd.de/index.php?article_id=40
We were lucky to catch the last regular tour of 2012 from the park centre, and since there were just the two of us, got a special personalised tour with park ranger Harald. The circuit walk took us through the oldest part of the forest and included breathtaking views of the Koenigsstuhl and coastline from the Viktoriasicht.
Harald shared so much, such as the mass fruiting of the beeches, pointed out the giant fungi that begin the decomposition process of a dead tree, and to a question, gently waxed philosophic about the nature of Nature, a humbling reminder of how insignificant a human lifetime is in the schema of Life.

"We visited Sellin for a few days and took the boat tour to see the white chalk cliffs of Rugen. It was a pleasant trip, se sea was calm and there were refreshments available on board. There was a stop at Binz where the Victorian hotels and beach cabanas looked like a 19th century flashback-- charmin..."g.

"Must admit, I was bit suprised to find HMS Otus moored in a German port on the Baltic Sea, proudly flying the Union Jack! Still haven't got to the bottom of quite how if got there!
Apparently this submarine was a leader in its class a the time. It's quite interesteing to compare and contrast with..." U-995 at Laboe; it's much bigger and everything is in English. It felt a bit odd! Everything has been well-preserved inside and there is an English leaflet available to guide you. The experience is augmented by sound effects, which seemed to come from an American movie, and the film 'Das Boot', which made things even more surreal!
Note - to pass thorugh the compartments, you have to move through the original circular doors, which are awkward to say the least. Also, watch out for low instrumentation - a bang to the head really hurts - trust me!
Highlight was the ability to look through the two periscopes. Alas, the conning tower is off-limts.
Entry is €6 plus a fee for photos. Recom...
