Bandelier National Monument is 50 square miles of the Pajarito Plateau, on the slopes of the Jemez Volcanic field in the Jemez Mountains. Over 70% of the Monument is Wilderness, with over 1 mile elevation change, from about 5000' along the Rio Grande to over 10,000' at the rim of the Valles Caldera, providing for a wide range of life zones and wildlife habitat. "Spent and amazing afternoon at Bandelier National Monument. The one thing I must say is that you have to make the climb to the Alcove House. It's a little intimidating especially if you any aversion to heights like I do. The climb consists of four steep wooden ladders and narrow stone stairs and wal..."k ways. I wasn't sure that I could do it but I knew that I would regret it if I didn't try. Once you reach the top, you'll understand why. The view was breathtaking. This was an awesome experience and to see the evidence of people who lived thousands of years ago was moving.

Since it wasn't far out of the way, we added it on, and we are so glad because it was the highlight of the day! It took about an hour from Santa Fe to get ther..."e, but the drive was beautiful. I am not sure how much it costs to go into the park because I have a national park pass, which covered entrance. Pick up a map for $1 at the visitor center so you can follow along with where you are on the hike. The trails are very easy. We did the circle trail up to the cave dwellings. It was very interesting because you could climb ladders up into the dwellings. Afterwards, we walked out to the Alcove house (an extra mile round trip). We had to climb a number of steep ladders. I don't recommend this part if you are afraid of heights. I thought we were going to go down into the Alcove house, but it was closed for renovations I think (unless I misunderstood th...

"We went here with family and were told it would only take 2 hours. We actually spent a good 4 hours and were blown away the beauty and history. Very interesting place. There is a gift shop and a small cafe. We were lucky enough to be able to drive down but usually there is a shuttle bus from White R..."ock which is free. Great day out and the pass also lasts a week.
