This canal-laced city is a far cry from its spring break party image of the past. Following renovation and renewal, upscale stores and restaurants have replaced fast-food stands and T-shirt shops.

The Mauch Chunk Opera House

Noted in National Geographic Traveler for its superb acoustics, the Opera House was an important stop on the old Vaudeville circuit. Today's schedule is diverse, from folk, rock, classical, and jazz. 2008 renovations include a new steel roof and theater seats. Relaxed, intimate and all seats have a great view. A nice night is to have dinner and then stroll a couple of blocks through the town of Jim Thorpe to the show.
