No matter when you go, pack and plan for a "backwoods" beach experience. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (we almost always have trouble with gnats and flies). There is very little shade and it's often a little windier than on the mainland. I wish the ferry personnel would be more informative. Years ago, they would narrate the history of the island. On our most recent trip, they answered questions though not very enthusiastically and the driver made remarks about smuggling in alcohol (NC state parks do not allow alcohol).
