Salty Dog Kayaks is a kayak rental shop located in beautiful Swansboro, NC with waterfront access to Bogue Sound and the White Oak River. You can explore the wonders of the Crystal Coast and grab a kayak for a quick afternoon paddle, take it to an island for a day of exploring or make it an adventure with a guided tour or personalized camping trip! We offer scavenger hunts for the kids and exciting tours such as "Crab Crazy" where you paddle with us around the coastal marsh and see how we pick our crab pots. Pack a picnic, slather on the sunscreen and bring the family our for a day of fun in the sun!

"We've taken the ferry to Hammocks Beach a dozen times or more over the last 30 years. The beach has remained unspoiled though it's not the hidden secret that it used to be. In the summer, the ferry will likely be full of vacationing families. Our favorite time to go is spring or fall - the 1/2 mile ..."walk from the ferry landing to the beach is much more enjoyable in cooler weather. No matter when you go, pack and plan for a "backwoods" beach experience. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (we almost always have trouble with gnats and flies). There is very little shade and it's often a little windier than on the mainland.
I wish the ferry personnel would be more informative. Years ago, they would narrate the history of the island. On our most recent trip, they answered questions though not very enthusiastically and the driver made remarks about smuggling in alcohol (NC state parks do not allow alcohol). This seems especially inappropriate with children and teens on board.

"If you are in the Swansboro area and have the time, do take the ferry ride to Hammocks Beach State Park. The parks department runs the ferry from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and the cost is minimal. There is, however, a 1/2 mile walk once on the island. Assistance is available for folks with disabili..."ties. Ask when you purchase your ferry tickets. We spent a delightful afternoon on the unspoiled beach of the island.
