The Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, located at Fort Constitution in New Castle, NH is open for guided tours every Sunday from 1PM - 5PM, late May through early October. For a small suggested donation, visitors can climb to the top and see the 4th order fresnel lens as well as a breathtaking view of Portsmouth Harbor.

"Visitors to Portsmouth often ask how to get to the Portsmouth Lighthouse. Well, this is the place, but it isn't in Portsmouth. It's in New Castle, the next town over - more of a village, really. The lighthouse is definitely cool, but you want to make sure you visit during one of their open house day..."s, so you can go inside. It's not just open all the time. When the Friends of the Lighthouse have the lighthouse open, you can climb up the winding staircase and go up into the top for a really good view. There's a lot of history to read, too. The lighthouse is on the grounds of the Coast Guard Station, so you have to park outside the gate and walk in. Also in there is a very cool, kind of wild and overgrown fort, called Fort Constitution. That's just wide open for rambling around. Very enjoyable on a hot summer day.

"This somewhat photogenic and historic 48-ft (15 m) white, conical, cast-iron, brick-lined lighthouse tower on the grounds of 2-acre Fort Constitution State Historic Site was built in 1878 on a peninsula at the northeast corner of New Castle Island. It overlooks the Piscataqua River and the Atlantic ..."Ocean and stands across the river mouth from Maine’s Whaleback Lighthouse. Other historic structures on the site include an oil house (1903), a keeper's house (1872), and a walkway out to the lighthouse tower. The lighthouse can be reached by boat as well as by a park road off US 1B at the US Coast Guard Station. Onsite parking is free. No use fee is charged. If you’re a fan of lighthouses, this is a good one to visit!
