One of the most significant wetlands in the Western U.S., the Lahontan Valley Wetlands is a bird-watcher’s paradise, with 280 species of birds. Located sixty miles east of Reno near Fallon, these wetlands are accessible, affordable and intriguing. Designated internationally important by Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve Network; Globally Important Bird Area by American Bird Conservancy; and Important Bird Area by National Audubon Society, these rich diverse wetlands attract a million waterfowl and 20,000 water birds.

"It's across the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express - we ate in the Cafe and it was good - they had a nice menu, good service. They also have a steakhouse which was closed that night - had it been open, we would have eaten there as that looked good as well."
"We usually try to hit any small-town museums we come across. To be honest, most of the time you do leave a little disappointed, which isn't the fault of the museum. It's just hard for some to have enough items to interest everyone, especially a tourist. But this one was really a surprise. It is very..." thorough with super-clean displays that managed to hold the interest of a 10-year-old. The people behind this should be very proud of themselves. It's a real winner.
Besides the history of the area, and a huge mineral display, we even learned about the evolution of bikes from the "bonecrusher," to the "ordinary" to the "safety bike" (which is pretty much what we have today). And that was just one small display. The second building also has some well-restored vehicles and the history of Churchill County's phone lines. For kids raised on cells, reading about true party lines will probably blow their minds.

"Nice place to take a walk or hike with the dogs or family. I would go before it gets too hot. Interesting petroglyphs but you can see where people have chipped some off to take, which is too bad. Just leave it alone!"
