Hancock Shaker Village is a living history museum whose mission is to bring the Shaker story to life and preserve it for future generations. Called the "City of Peace" by the Shakers who lived here for 179 years until 1960, this community was the third of 19 major Shaker Villages located in New York, New England, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. There are 18 original historic buildings on this site. The staff and volunteers are dedicated to making the Village a center for reflection on living the principled life. The values that the Shakers embraced -- equality, pacifism, community, sustainability, responsible land stewardship, innovation, simplicity and quality in work -- resonate with us today. In addition to viewing the architecture, we have so many things to see including the farm and gardens, the animals, costumed interpreters, demonstrations of handicrafts like weaving, spinning, and blacksmithing, hiking and walking trails, the Discovery Room where kids can do hands-on activities, photo and art exhibitions, a cafe and picnic area. We have modern amenities and the village is handicapped accessible.

"Much as I like historical museums, etc., I had put off visiting this - seeing an old barn built by a religious group? Why bother? Two things: The buildings and grounds are gorgeous. If the weather is decent, you simply cannot take a bad picture here. Who knew the Shakers would create something so ph..."otogenic? Also, the Shakers were more admirable and interesting than I thought they were - and don't think they were like the Amish - my biggest learning nugget was that they embraced technology. Surprising that they were so good at engineering and problem solving, but didn't forsee what a celibate lifestyle might due to the long term prospects of their Society. So, by all means go - we were lucky enough to visit during "small animal days" when the mothers and offspring of various farm animals were available to interact with.

"Great, and educational visit to a real Shaker village. Lovely gift shop with artisan products and things you will not find other places. And a pleasant cafe, with local and healthy food...and the best ice cream from SoCo.
If you are lucky to go on a beautiful spring day, you will be overwhelmed..." by the simple beauty of the setting and by the amazing ingenuity of the Shakers. A must stop when in the Southern Berkshires.

"In the spring, Hancock Shaker Village showcases its baby animals. Step into the round barn and have close encounters with baby goats, calves, and sheep. In another barn are baby chickies in a glass house with a red light, keeping them warm. In this barn is a place where children may try on Shaker..." clothing, see honeybees at work, and partake in crafts and coloring. The village features houses showing how the Shakers lived and worked. One house was devoted to the washing. Another has a carpenter demonstrating Shaker furniture-making. They let my son try it and taught him how to use the equipment. In another room is a broom-maker! What I took away from this experience was how efficient they were, making use of everything, nothing wasted. People come in droves to see the baby animals, so be warned. Other times of year you may watch the "babies" grow.
Their gift shop has unusual souvenirs that you cannot get anywhere else. They feature a café with Berkshire-made ice cream (...
