Maine's oldest lighthouse - and one of the most picturesque and most frequently photographed in the U.S. - has been in operation since 1791. Although it is closed to the public, you can stop by the adjacent museum, enjoy the grounds which include a beach, lawns and picnic areas and view boats entering and leaving the harbor.

"Portland Head Light is the most photographed Lighthouse in the World and for good reason! I have visited the lighthouse on three different trips, all during different seasons and it's amazingly beautiful any time of year. The setting on the ocean cliffs is breathtaking. Don't miss this iconic light..."house! You've seen it many times in photos... like on Red Lobster's menu for example.. but you've got to see it in person!! You won't believe how beautifully it photographs even with you cell phone camera!

"This was such a pretty spot. It could be a five minute quick stop to take an impressive picture, or a perfect spot to walk around and linger much longer. The cliffs, the views, the picturesque lighthouse ("Portland Headlight") -- we were captivated. Easy to get to, plenty of parking (at least while ..."we were there--a weekday in May). I guess there's a small museum, but it's only open some months (June-Sept?). This is what my image of Maine was before traveling there; I'm so glad we found this spot.

"This was a great, peaceful day trip from our honeymoon in Old Orchard Beach. Lots to see but not much to do but walk around and take many pictures of the sights. Was there for a couple hours. Was foggy on the water so horn and light were going constantly but still could go to the old buildings on la..."nd and read the info about them. This place is definitely set up as a school trip destination. Had a nice time and was not crowded since it was pre-season. There is a museum and gift shop in the old innkeeper house but it was not open when we were there. Short trip to Spring Lighthouse and Bug Lighthouse also.
