- Tommy599Two Rivers, WI874 contributionsWalked across the street skywalk from the Bally’s Tower Hotel (part of the Bally’s casino) to the USS Landin Ship Tank (LST) memorial museum. LST 325 is one of 1,050 LST’s built for WW II (some were even used in the Vietnam War).
LST 325 is 328 ft long and 50 ft wide. AND COULD LAND 20 Sherman Tanks right up on the beach. She is flat bottomed and has a top speed of 11 knots (about 12.7 MPH). LST 325 served in the invasion of Sicily and Normandy. Although not built in Evansville Indiana, 167 of her sister LST ships were built right here in Evansville on the Ohio River. LST 325 is fully operational and does several sails each year (for promotional visits and in support of WW II reenactments), up and down the Mississippi from LaCross Wisconsin to Texas. She is currently getting ready to sail down to Texas for another routine 10 year drydocking (hull inspection/repainting). There is only one other LST (393) open for tours and she is on Lake Michigan at Muskegon Michigan. LST 393 museum ship is currently in need of very expensive drydocking repairs, and her fate is still up in the air.
LST 325 here in Evansville has about 1,500 active members that on & off support the upkeep of the ship, with about 50 of those that are hardcore members/workers. The tour (guided) cost $15 PP and was very well done.Written November 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I loved the photo exhibit showing the then and now. The juried art exhibit was also fun to wander through. The first floor was dedicated to interactive science exhibits complete with explanations of the science behind why and how the activity worked. I had an absolute ball wandering through this museum and the adjacent train station. I went to a planetarium show. I also to wander through the train.Written January 2, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Rad Dgainesville, fl.439 contributionsOh, my goodness, what a SPECTACULAR building! I could have spent another hour there and would love to go back to do just that. On top of it all, the staff (4 to whom I spoke) were SO friendly, and one could hardly contain herself about how much she loved her job. It was the highlight of my visit to Evansville.Written May 28, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jeanett ONarvik, Norway87 contributionsI thought this was a cute medium sized zoo. They have a good variation in animals. For a couple of dollars you could feed the giraffs which was super cool. The zoo also provides a guided shuttle tour for a small fee.Written June 4, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Susan C10 contributionsI'm familiar with Burdette Park. Over the years I've been to events in various shelter houses, used the Aquatic Center, participated in a Bird watching walk around the wetland area, used the Burdette-USI bike trail, and attended a wedding in the Discovery Lodge. My kids even attended summer camp here years ago. This week, we brought our travel trailer out to the campground, and I'm spending quality time with my 6 & 7 year old grandchildren. The campground is small but well laid out so that every site is a pull through. RV sites are level concrete pads. They have a few full hookups, while we got an electric sit with a water hookup. We needed an extra hose to reach the spigot. The wifi is sketchy, perhaps because it's not password protected. I have not used the bath house, laundry facilities or dump station provided.
There are many activities to choose from. We're having a good time going to the pool each day, but it's more than a pool! The Aquatic Center has 4 big water slides, many small water slides (in the baby pool), a splash park, and everal pool areas of varied depth , including a diving pool. There are 2 concession stands, a small store, and float rentals. I needed a double tube to ride the slide with my grandchildren, but they were all checked out the last 2 days. In fact , they were totally out of floats. Fortunately, I saw a family departing earlier today, so I was able to follow them to the float rental booth and get it before someone snatched it up. I'm not sure why they choose to provide only single tubes for the slides. The kids can ride bikes around the campground, which is posted 5 mph, but the road to the main park area and bike trail have hills that are too challenging for little kids. They've enjoyed a few different playground areas, and 2 new playgrounds are currently being constructed. We're hoping the BMX track will be in use tomorrow, so we can watch, if not try it out.Written June 6, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We walked out to the main mound but honestly we were so tired we couldnt go further. The museum has a lot of information on the site also. It does have days its closes check the website and plan accordingly. They do have free parking, the have a small gift shop and its mostly outside so plan for that also.Written May 11, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BethEvansville, IN7 contributionsMy kids love the Nature Playscape; what a gem in the middle of the city and such a great way for them to connect with nature and be wild! - MPinFCFort Collins, Colorado278 contributionsFun afternoon with my four year old. Loved the Japanese play kitchen and the large blue foam blocks. The duck duck area was not working. A few other exhibits were not working as well but fortunately there was still quite a bit of other activities to do. Good price for entertainment for a family wanting to escape the heat on a hot day.Written July 6, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
