When the tide comes in, the beach is transformed into a harbour, with the entrance channel suddenly busy with visiting yachts, fishing boats setting out for the day or returning with their catch, local small boats going out to fish as well as clouds of small sailing boats racing or cruising within the harbour. The golden sands are backed by colourful beach huts which have been the subject of many a painting and postcard. The popular Beach Cafe nearby is perfect for refreshments during your visit. « less

Surrounded by acres of rolling parkland this magnificent Palladian building is a joy to discover, full of treasures in every room, from incredible architecture and stunning art, to original furniture and statuary. New Exhibition for 2014 'Duty Calls: Holkham 1914 to 1918'. Our exhibition commemorates the 100 year anniversary of the start of WW1 when in August 1914 Great Britain and the Commonwealth were at war with Germany. It tells a small part of the Holkham story and the war's impact on the Coke family and the small village of Holkham. Personal letters, archives, books, photographs and artefacts illustrate the works of the war poets, the creativity of the soldiers' trench art and relate the experiences and personal stories of some of the local people involved in what was the world's first global conflict. In the Bygones Museum step back in time, relive memories and learn how people once lived, what they used and how inventive they were. Our 18th century walled gardens are undergoing a five-year project to sensitively restore them to their former glory. A great chance for you to see the amazing restoration work in progress and buy a plant or two. The park is 3000 acres in size and a sanctuary for wildlife. Our nature trail, signposted walks and bike hire are a great opportunity to see the flora and fauna and some of our landmarks of historical and architectural significance. Or why not relax on a leisurely lake cruise, hire canoes, kayaks and rowing boats. Our woodland adventure play area, with a tree house, walkways and a zip-wire is great fun and sure to entertain the family. Why not extend your visit to enjoy one of our many events. Our varied programme offers delights such as chamber music and opera in the Marble Hall and outdoor theatre in the courtyard, plus visit Holkham Hall for our magical Christmas celebration in tru Holkham style! Visit our website for full information on our visitor season and Christmas opening times and admission prices. « less
