In 1875, Colonel Samuel West Peel built a marvelous villa tower Italiante mansion on the outskirts of Bentonville, Arkansas. It was a working farmstead surrounded by 180 acres of apple trees. The Peel Mansion is an outdoor museum of heritage roses, perennials, and native plants. Various vignette gardens are interlaced among curvilinear walks and large shade trees creating a most appropriate setting for this great historic building of northwest Arkansas. Also on the site is the pre-Civil War Andy Lynch log cabin which serves as a gatehouse and gift shop at the entrance to the grounds. The cbin was moved to The Peel Mansion property from Brightwater, Arkansas, just east of Rogers.

"Plan to spend the day, or even 2 if you plan to explore any of the trails. The setting is beautiful in the Spring - many flowers and flowering trees, and I imagine even better in Autumn when the whole of Northwest Arkansas is beautiful. The single negative thing about the place is the crowds. Oth..."erwise, it is wonderful - even the building is interesting and unique. The collection is wonderful - huge and varied, but well explained - by the staff if you have questions, by the plaques if you just want to quietly contemplate. The temporary exhibits are great - went during the Norman Rockwell exhibit, and learned a lot!! A little tip, if the crowds start to overwhelm you, head down the hall, past the temporary exhibits, to a gallery that is essentially empty, other than many windows overlooking water and trees, and a few people quietly sketching and absorbing the quiet and the smell of the wood rafters and floors. I didn't sample any food, but the smells from the restaurant were great ...

"This was my second trip to the museum, which opened 11-11-11
and some of the pictures had been moved and there were new ones to see.
The museum has fantastic views of the outside from many of the galleries, with the
outdoor sculptures and scenery as much a part of the display as the indoor art.
..."
The musuem has samples of American artists up through a few recent ones,
and it is a small enough museum that you can walk through it all in one viewing.
This is a beautiful location, with walks from near the center of town out to the museum, along paths with sculptures, flowers and shrubs in the massive trees. Don't miss the outdoors!
