Opened in February of 1997, the Asarco Mineral Discovery Center (AMDC) is designed to convey the vital importance of mining in our civilization. Everything that we use everyday was somehow extracted from the earth — either by farming or by mining, and “if it can’t be grown, it has to be mined.”Located 20-minutes south of Tucson, AMDC has an exhibit center, theater and gift shop. For a nominal fee, tours are conducted of Asarco's Mission Mine; an active open-pit copper mine. Tour schedule is subject to change, reservations are recommended.

The Titan Missile Museum is the only publicly accessible Titan II missile site in the nation. Tour the underground missile site. Visit the launch control center, experience a simulated launch!
"Of course this missile has been dismantled, no nuclear stuff or dangerous raditation but still a bit creepy if you think about it. In our "living history" this was a serious thread from the Cold War. We as Europeans now a lot about it, being in the middle of it. I'm very intested in everything from ..."the Cold War and this is an unique way of seeing a bit of the ugly side from it. The reception is friendly and the infomative, obligatory video brings you in the right state of mind. With the tour guide you decent a few flight of stairs, the same stairs and route that the military staff has taken for 20 years. If you're not able to walk the stairs you should let them know in the reception area because you will get a stamp and a elevator ride down to the working area of the staff. Under the ground you'll visit the command center and the actual silo where "the bomb" is still in it. It's creepy, it's overwhelming'it's informative and it's unforgettable. The tourguides are very knowledgable abou...

"We were here late in the afternoon and had two wait more than one hour to get the tour. We are so happy now we did the wait ! The surrounding area of the reception building has some older and modern mining equiptment to show. Within the building was a shop and a small exhibition area. It also had a ..."video showing area and different small informative movies were shown there. Than the tourguide picked us up and took us to the airconditioned bus. In the bus he explained the tour to us and mainwhile we were driven up to the current running mining area. The pit was - enormous, deeper than the highest skyscraper, wider than our eyes could see. The big machineries were like ants on a mountain ! Impressive. Than we were taken to the mill. Very informative and surprisingly quiet and clean. We had a great time asking the tourguide and busdrives about everything and anything. We were lucky that the other couple had the same interests as we have so that was really great. The tour is great and somet...

"Any Cold War history buff - or anyone who lived through the Cold War, should make a point to visit. The tour of a decommissioned and restored Titan II missile silo and command center is really well done. If in or near Tucson, its about 30 minutes to the south and worth the trip.
The tour includes..." a simulated launch sequence - which was chilling and awesome at the same time.
The museum itself doesn't really offer much - its all about the tour. Call ahead to book a time - or risk missing the tour. They were running on the hour when I arrived, and I had just missed the tour - so I ended up hanging out for an hour.
There are some stairs to climb but an elevator is provided for those who need it.
The gift shop was a little light on books but had some really cool items - like a replica launch key.
This is pretty much the only attraction in the area, but still worth the trip.
Water is available for purchase in the gift shop for a reasonable $1 a bottle, and you can take it with yo...
