"A group of all of varying biking abilities rode this trail from Horopito to Ohakune. Whilst the trail is not long (15 km) it does have quite a bit of variety in trail conditions and attractions. The trail covers the old coach road that used to join the two ends of the main trunk railway before it was..." finally connected. As a result the trail grading of 2 to 3 is quite accurate with steeper grades, rough surface and great bush tracks over most of its length.
There are great attractions with long viaducts, tunnels and great vistas to be enjoyed and the length of the trail doesn't make it too much of a challenge so. It is a good trail to take all the family on.

"Enjoy getting off the beaten track? Cycle or walk this easy going 14.5km along the Old Coach Road through beautiful native bush and hear the birds sing. Suitable for all ages of reasonable fitness. There were families with 6 year olds enjoying this trip. Stop for a picnic at the old railway viaduct...." Mini van drop off and pick up can be arranged through Ohakune Info Centre near Mt Ruapehu in the heart of North Island, New Zealand.

"Very pleasant day walk with good scenery and nice railway viaducts to cross.
Signage is in need of a bit of repair here and there but overall well worth doing."
