Kandy Attractions: What to do & Places to Visit in Kandy
"The story goes that a young princess smuggles the tooth belonging to the great Buddha from India to the safe keeping of her palace in Sri Lanka. This temple in the palace grounds is devoted to the worship of that tooth.
We were lucky enough to be there on a special Buddhist holiday where the pilgri..."ms flocked here from all over the country to pay homage to 'the tooth' of their founder.
It was an amazing spectacle - whole families dressed in white carrying offerings of lotus flowers to lay before the tabernacle which holds the tooth. Huge crowds filing patiently past the sacred sight in silence and utmost reverence, then spending time in the grounds to meditate or just 'be'.
We were moved by such unquestioning faith.

"The Garrison Cemetery is a little hard to find - to the rear of the Temple of the Tooth and a little way up a track that passes a police facility. Signposting isn't brilliant. I disagree with the reviewer who commented "It's just a cemetery" - for this is a piece of colonial history and the graves s..."peak of the kind of people who forged Great Britain's enormous empire during the nineteenth century. There are several women and children here. One man, the inscription says, died from diarrhoea while another was trampled by an elephant. They were so far from home, wrestling with an unfamiliar and forbidding tropical climate. Fortunately, I was led around the cemetery by its dedicated keeper who speaks very passable English and was able to deal with all of my questions. This cemetery should not be confused with the World War II cemetery which is three miles south west of Kandy. This confusion has been exacerbated by errors in "The Lonely Planet" guide to Sri Lanka.

"How do you review a lake? Kandy Lake lies to the east of the city centre and creates a peaceful, cooling presence that contrasts with the often frenetic activity in Kandy's commercial heart. Its construction pre-dated colonisation by the British and there are various tales about it - including one..." unsubstantiated story that the island in the middle of the lake was once used as a harem.
If you plan a circumnavigation of the lake via the pathway, you will cover 2.1 miles. It is a nice walk - mostly in shade. You may spot the Victorian British-style pillar box and you will certainly notice the bath house where monks from the Temple of the Tooth used to bathe. I think it is nice that there are no pleasure boats on the lake and no fishing either. These rules protect its tranquillity.
What more can you say? It's a lovely lake surrounded by trees and residential hills. It brims with fish and birdlife. Kandy is a pleasant little city - much cooler than Colombo and the lake is one of it...
