Even though the exhibits and installations are all in Portuguese, newcomers to the language can pick up its rhythm and flow through videos, recitations and interactive presentations designed to facilitate communication across linguistic barriers, highlighting the multicultural nuances the language has acquired over the centuries, as well as its European origins. « less

Featuring classical European names such as Gauguin, Goya and Gainsborough, the museum also holds one of the largest collections of Brazilian and other Latin American artists on the continent. « less

The landscaped gardens provide a refreshing respite from the surrounding urban chaos, while the ornate museum itself — affiliated with the University of São Paulo — educates visitors in the history of the city and nation via portraiture, antique vehicles, housewares and informational installations. Ticket includes entrance to the nearby Museu de Zoologia (Zoology Museum). « less

In fact, there are so many statues, photographs, illustrations, masks, dolls, clothes, documents, paintings, furniture, pieces of plantation equipment, installations and mementos, it's almost impossible to take in the whole place in one go. The printed information is almost exclusively in Portuguese, but the museum provides English-speaking guides, and the back stories behind every single object are at once harrowing and hopeful. Hands down, one of the best museums in Latin America. « less

The Instituto Butantan, a biomedical research and zoological center founded in 1901, has all these creepy crawlies and more. The institute was instrumental in controlling scores of tropical diseases and now focuses on developing vaccines and researching venomous animals. Brazil's largest serpentarium is on-site, as is a convenient anti-venom clinic, just in case things get out of hand. In any event, the kiddies will get a kick out of handling the cool-blooded things, or at least peering at them through reinforced glass. Once you've had your fill of scales and rattles, take a stroll in the lovely landscaped gardens. « less

The collection of pavilions and galleries houses paintings, sculptures and folk art, along with a rotating schedule of performances and events, like the annual São Paulo Latin American Cinema Festival.
