Located near the shores of Lake Erie, the Ashtabula Arts Center is a multi-arts facility that features dance, theater, music and the visual arts. On the grounds you will find Straw Hat Theatre, our outdoor summer venue for musical productions. Straw Hat Theatre is a covered pavillion type of structure with canvas sides giving it the feel of large circus tent and protecting patrons from wind and rain so that the show can go on even when the weather is less than perfect. Straw Hat Theatre musical productions run from June through August. September through April productions are produced by G.B. Community Theatre on the Arts Center's indoor main stage and inclue comedies, dramas, musicals and more. Our Theater department offers a variety of acting and audition classes and workshops throughout the year for both children and adults. Through its resident performing company, “Ballet Theatre Ashtabula,” a production of "The Nutcracker" is produced each December and an original spring dance show is held each May, showcasing different styles of dance. Dance classes are offered in classical ballet, jazz, modern, ballroom, tap and more. The Music department offers a variety of performances, programs, classes and recitals as well as individual instruction in many instruments. “The Good Life,” a community vocal group consisting of area singers, performs annually during the holiday season and in the spring. “The Show-Offs” and “The Starlights” are the Arts Center’s young adult and youth choirs. All three choral groups are available for performing in outside venues such as festivals, weddings, parties and more. Rotating art gallery exhibits change each month and feature the works of local, regional and national artists. The gallery is open to the public during regular business hours. Admission to the gallery is free. A wide variety of classes and workshops are also offered by our visual arts department including pottery, drawing, painting, knitting and many, many more. The Ashtabula Arts Center is open Monday through Thursday 9 - 9, Friday 9 - 4 and Saturday 9 - 1. Driving Directions to the Ashtabula Arts Center: Directions from the WEST (Mentor, Painesville, Cleveland)I-90 or Rt. 20 to Rt. 45. Turn left; follow Rt. 45 until it ends at Rt. 531. Turn Right. Proceed approximately .9 miles to Martini’s. Veer right onto Atlantic Street - this turns into West 13th Street just before Kent State University. Kent State is on the left. The Arts Center is two blocks past Kent State on the right hand side of the street.
