This world heritage site was the home of Tokugawa leyasu, one of the most powerful men in Japan. The castle was built as a residence and not for defense purposes. However, to protect the shogun from enemies, special creaky floorboards were installed to warn of anyone approaching.

"It was so beautiful going there one early morning in late October. The weather was cool and clear with some sun beams being cast through the trees with the sound of chanting in the distance.
Simply amazing.
Be ready to take your time and sweat it out, lots of going up and down hill as you are pret..."ty much walking on the side of Mt. Inari.
Pro tip: If you are looking for a great souvenir, there are numerous shops selling orange torii (gates), skip most of them and look for the last shop before the path sends you back down the mountain (there is a sign saying the path returns you to the beginning which is just past the shop). It is run by a little old lady, that has tables outside with tiny torii with little bells on them. They are at a great price compared to the other ones and she will write your name and a wish on it, then purify it. The process takes all but 10 mins and was totally worth it.>w<" More >
"This place, I saw the tradition of Japanese temple, Naturally beautiful place. Water from mountain base source is really cool. Very old (don't know the age) wooden pillars hold the temple ! Take some nice pictures."
"A peek on the residence of the shogun and love the design and sound of the floor . The historical design of the castle is owe some and though 600 yen entrance fee is a bit pricey but worthwhile if you consider as donation to preserve the place and visit the sakura trees during spring"
