This is an important and famous section of The Great Wall originally built in 583 AM that played a significant role in the military defense of the Ming Dynasty. Shanhaiguan Pass is located in the small harbor town of Qinhuangdao by the Sea.

"There is only one part of the wall which reaches the ocean, this in it's self makes Laolangtou worth visiting, but there is more appeal than just that. Like much of the wall in this area it is well restored, which makes it easy to navigate but for me takes away from the sense of history. On a nice..." summers day it is a great spot to look out to sea, walk on the beach and soak up a bit of history I would even suggest a picnic on the beach on a good day. There is a pier a short walk along the beach and a few little shops to buy nick-naks. Very cold and very windy in the winter however, so pick the timing of your visit well. A great photo opportunity, although, there was a bit of a ship-wreck the last time we visited, so you may want to check it it has been salvaged before you go.

"Whether you've seen the more famous hill crawling sections inland or have never set foot on it, there is only one place you can see The Great Wall plunge into the sea. This made us choose QHD as our entry point into China from South Korea.
It is a heavily restored section due to its location and ..."footfall so if you're one of those people who grumbles about the restoration etc, note that there is a protected section of unrestored wall in the fort here too.
Probably not worth a trip out from Beijing just for this and not as spectacular as the hill crawling parts near QHD or north of Beijing, but it is a significantly easier walk (being flat) and a great alternative location to become one of Chairman Mao's "real men". If you're passing through or in the area then you should certainly visit.

"The morning of our visit to the wall was overcast and cold, small snow flakes were falling and the air was crisp. We manager to climb to the third lookout. That nearly killed us, but it was worth it even being overcast the views amazing. The sun started to break through just as we made it to the loo..."kout, which was great. The steps are very uneven with some as low as 3 inches and others up to my knees. 18 to 20 inches which made the climb a bit tough at times. Comming down was just as hard as your legs started to turn to jelly and by the time we made it down we could hardly walk, but enjoyed every minute of it.
