The Chinatown of Jakarta began long before Indonesia existed as a nation and was originally the Chinatown of Batavia. This was the area where the Dutch required the Chinese to live. Today, the whole area is called Glodok and includes traditional houses, markets, architecture and some very beautiful Chinese temples; the Da Shi Miao and the Vihara Dharma Bhakti temples are both popular tourist attractions. The Glodok Market is one of the great commercial centers of Jakarta where you can buy everything from antiques to laptops.

Fatahillah Square, also known as Old Batavia, is the historical district of Jakarta located in Kotas. During Dutch Colonial times in the 16th century, this was the heart of the walled city. Home to attractions such as the Jakarta History Museum and many colonial buildings, this area fills up with artisans, jugglers, and tourists on the weekends.

"We visited Ancol Dreamland with a group of 6 children and several adults and had an enjoyable time. The park itself is a bit dated however the rides all seemed functional and safe and the kids (and adults) all enjoyed themselves!
We arrived late in the afternoon and it was still very hot and hum..."id; it may be better to go earlier in the day in order to avoid the heat.
There are many choices for food both inside and outside of the park so finding local foods or getting a burger at McDonalds are all options.
One aspect that we really enjoyed was the band which was playing at closing time near the main gate. The band was very good at engaging and entertaining the crowd which made for a great ending to a fun day!

"Disclaimer: I adore textiles, especially when travelling. If youre anything like me, or just want to see an amazingly large mall with anything from shoes to electronics at very good prices- this should be on your list.
Levels B1 and B2 are where the textiles are, personally i found B2 to have a be..."tter selection. Thousands of Batiks and Ikat. Be sure to bargain you can get great prices as there's a good deal of competition among vendors!

"I visited on a Sunday when it was full of kids taking each others' photos next to amazing pieces of old Dutch furniture in the dark interior of the old Staadhuis (City Hall). I liked the place although information was a bit sparse. It makes a refreshing change from the interactive/entertainment focu..."s of a lot of museums in the West, and I enjoyed the irreverence (but totally non-hostile) of the kids. The museum is on Fatahilah Square which was full of entertainers, puppet shows, living statues and the youngsters of Jakarta having a great time.
