At 509 meters high, this was the world's tallest building from 2004 to 2010, when the Burj Khalifa in Dubai surpassed it. The tower is reminiscent of a pagoda or a stalk of bamboo and designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes common in Taiwan. Floors one through five are a shopping center and both the indoor (89th floor) and outdoor (91st floor) observation decks offer a 360-degree panoramic view.

Its length is about two hundred meters, and its architecture dates back to the early days when the Republic of China was newly established. Architecture buffs will enjoy this display of Japanese colonial architecture. Peruse historic relics and stores selling art and ceramics. Be sure to visit Zushi Temple, considered to be one of the most beautifully sculpted in Taiwan.

"Very nice temple. It has beautiful decor and is fairly large. Did however feel quite out of place seeing as most of the people there were praying. Felt kind of weird seeing this as a tourist attraction when everyone else there saw it as a holy place of worship. Still a nice thing to see while in Tai..."pei. It's possible to walk to Ximending which gives you a chance to see the streets of Taipei, although it takes a while, it was fun to walk around and observe.

"Even in the rain, Shihlin Night market is not to be missed. From street food - some more appetising than others: we tried BBQ pork and squid kebabs, a delicious 'donut' with minced pork inside, and a disgusting deep-fried egg pancake; gave the chicken bottoms, feet and hearts a miss, and eschewed an..."ything unrecognisable - to fashion accessories: shoes, clothes and bags (a Longchamp copy for US$6), and shooting ranges. All great fun and humming with people.

"I was really impressed with all the chinese art gathered in the museum! The porcelain was beautiful and all the artifacts gathered from the different dynasties were fun to see. "
