The Ethnological museum is located in the University of of Addis Ababa compound and at the Institute of Ethiopian Studies ..." ( every taxi driver knows where it is ). The museum building itself is of interest as it used to be the old palace, and a number of the rooms are open to visitors. On the second floor of the museum is a good exhibition of Ethiopian crosses , by the end of it you should have gathered the difference between Processional Crosses, Hand crosses and Neck crosses, as well as the influence that Jerusalem , Cairo and Venice have had on local culture. The museum has a fairly well priced shop and entrance is 50 Birr. On the way out take a nice walk through the university compound. And I agree with a previous reviewer that the signage is fine, the lighting may not be great. " More >

  "This is really worth a visit . Not only is the trip getting there interesting , with your taxi probably struggling a bit up the hill, but the visit goes well beyond the church . It gives you an opportunity to visit the Emperor's palace before the move was made to the palace at Addis Ababa ( which ..."is now the institute of Ethiopian Studies. The guided tour is worth it and you will have a great of view of the city. The church museum is worth the visit and the guide was absolutely superb, he answered my questions professionally. Apart from the great exhibition of the evolution of mankind, I think that this is a better museum than the national museum if you are looking for an insight into the workings of the Ethiopian Church and earlier imperial daily life.
