"The site is a nice walk thru a less spectular ruins. The few museum stelae are the superb highlight, and make it worth the visit. I was only tourist there in late afternoon."
"We visited Nim Li Punit on the same day we saw Lubaantun. The two sites, although not far apart in distance are very different. Nim Li Punit covers less area, but where Lubaantun had no Stelas, (slabs of rock with carvings and what look like hieroglyphics) Nim Li Punit has many stelas including what..." I believe we were told is the largest in Belize. The stelas at the visitor center are very impressive, and are worth the trip all by themselves. Given their age, some are in incredible condition.
The rest of the area is, like Lubaantun, partially excavated and very interesting, with even more stelas. To me this site was more mysterious than Lubaantun, as if the Maya did business there but had Nim Li Punit for more spiritual needs. We saw some open tombs, which added to that feeling. Maybe we were just lucky that day, but once again we were all alone at the site.We feel very fortunate to have been able to visit Nim Li Punit.
That being said, this may not be for everyone. It is cretai...

"We made the drive from Hopkins to check out Lubaantun. It was a managable distance, but watch out for those "pedestrian walkways" if you prefer that your vehicle not become airborne.
The site is fairly large and spread out, and the day we were there, we had the place to ourselves except for a par..."k ranger who had lived in the area his whole life and is extremely knowledgable about Labaantun. Walking thru the ruins was a very peaceful experience. Apparently one of the first excavators of this and several other sites used explosives to remove debris, causing damage. Lots of structures and a couple of the Maya ballcourts are visible. This is also reportedly where the infamous Crystal Skull was found.
Be advised that Labaantun is not completely excavated and restored like Tikal or Lamanai, but neither is it overrun with busloads of visitors. For us this is a good trade-off. If you're looking for something a little off the beaten path, take a look.
