  "Wonderful piece of history in the East Bay"
  "I had no idea that Alameda served a role in WWII until I found a Groupon for the USS Hornet and decided to check it out. All this time, I never knew that just a half hour from where I lived lie "40,000 tons of history" (USS Hornet slogan). The tour costs $16 for adults but with a Groupon or Amaz..."on Local Deals you can get a two-for-one deal. The self-guided tour can be completed in less than two hours but that is if you do not stop to read everything in the displays on the second deck. If you do, you can easily spend 3+ hours here. The ship is not as grand as the USS Midway in San Diego and does not have nearly as many planes on the flight deck, but it is nevertheless very interesting and worth the trip. The view of SF and the Bay Bridge from the ship is also very beautiful on a clear day. Moreover, the Hornet is surrounded by many other active military ships which make for a great photo opportunity.   "We love old military memorabilia especially if it involves aviation. The tour was led by a docent who was an old engineering officer on the ship. He was very knowledgeable about the ship. The group on the tour was small which made it easy to hear and ask questions."
