You may wish to have a relaxing cup of coffee or even stay the night at the Ticarjev mountain hut, which is located at the top of the pass. There are five mountain huts on Vrsic offering you rest and refreshment. Just off the main road winding up Vrsic, at an altitude of around 1200 metres rests the Russian chapel. Whilst ascending Vrsic, you can admire the natural rock-carved face of the lovely maiden Ajdovska deklica and a natural rock-window created in the face of the Prisank mountain. « less

This was a rich landowner’s home and, at one time, it was also an inn. The wooden part of the house was built in the second half of the 17th century while the small, brick room beside was constructed in the 18th century, in the Baroque style. In its time the Liznjekova house was an example of the most advanced architecture in Slovenia. Its design was the prototype for other farmhouses with a cellar that served also as a barn, it had a brick ground floor with a wooden living room, a brick-built black kitchen, a small bedroom, broad hall, small room and another small bedroom off the hall and one wooden pillar above the entrance. The house retained its original architecture until the end of the 19th century. Since then, nothing has been changed apart from the ground floor windows and new walls which have been installed in the hall and the side entrance. In addition to the black kitchen and the old room layout, nowadays the building houses an ethnographic museum collection and a permanent exhibition of the life and work of Josip Vandot, the author of the popular children’s stories about Kekec. « less

Russians prisoners built the neat little chapel between 1916 and 1917. The chapel has two small towers built in traditional Russian style. All around the chapel and along the roadside are the graves of Russian soldiers. In the First World War Vrsic was a strategic point providing the Austrian troops a more accessible router to the Soča Front. The supply of arms was crucial and the road to Vrsic had to be kept clear at all times, including during the winter months. Therefore, in winter, huge amounts of snow were cleared from the road by Russian prisoners of war under close supervision of the Austrian army. One day a huge avalanche buried the Russian prison camp, killing more than three hundred Russian prisoners and ten of their guards. « less

It is a staggering 80 metres tall and 40 metres wide. Its tattered rock cliffs and the large mound of scree below indicate that sometime in history, the rock was punctured at a weak joint causing a landslide that, through rock-deterioration and weathering, grew to its present day size. Which is the correct name, Prisank or Prisojnik? This is a dilemma that has been going on for more than a century. Both names mean the same in the Slovenian language and the name of the mountain indicates that its slopes are positioned to face the Sun. « less

Legend has it that the Ajdovska maidens foretold the people of Kranjska Gora their fortune at birth. They also advised the people when to sow their crops and when to harvest them. One of the maidens foretold the son of a hunter that he would kill the Goldenhorn which inhabited the surrounding mountains. This prophecy angered the other maidens who punished Ajdovska deklica by turning her into rock. « less

It was built in honour of the Virgin Mary and was called the church of Mary at Beli prod. Only the bell tower, built from sandy blocks in Romanesque style remains from the original church. The existing church dates back to the late Gothic period and was built in 1510 by master builder Jernej Firtaler from Villach. A certain Carinthian influence is evident mainly in the nave vault, which is supported by internal pillars and decorated with a web of ribs which makes it one of the most interesting of its kind in Slovenia. « less

Its source, which surfaces from a rock crack and flows down the rocky riverbed to the valley, is called Nadiza. It soon disappears again in the gravelly terrain only to surface again a few hundred meters lower down the valley at Zelenci. « less

The lake fills with water in autumn and spring when there is an abundance of rain, while it freezes during the winter months. As the summer warms up the air, the lake disappears leaving a patch of lush grass for the local farmers to cut. The waters of the lake are said to be connected to the Sava Dolinka and Nadiza rivers. « less

It is a one-floor stone house with a double-sloping roof with a gable and external corridors. A former home of a medium well-off farm has a typical floor plan: living room with a small room, hall with a black kitchen and a granary. A fresco of St. Florian is preserved on the eastern facade, and a sundial can be seen on the southern facade. The main entrance has a semi-circular stone portal and profiled door. Evidence, proving the existence of an original wooden building, has been found in the house. The ground-floor plan in repeated on the first floor, however, there are no rooms above the black kitchen or the granary. The house as it looked in the 19th century has been partly preserved while the farm building has not. Builders’ joinery and carpentry was made very carefully, and preserved are the front doors, doors to the pantry and black kitchen, parts of built-in cupboards and stucco decoration in the living room. In 1995 the Municipality of Kranjska Gora bought Kajznk’s house, which had been damaged in a fire, and gradually renovated it under the authority of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Kranj. The renovation was completed in 2004. « less
