Owner description: Introibo ad altare Dei [ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meam] I'll go to the altar of God [which makes glad my youth]... more » Owner description: Introibo ad altare Dei [ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meam] I'll go to the altar of God [which makes glad my youth] This inscription is carved on a fragment of an arc of, perhaps, ciborium of early Christian basilica and is one of extraordinary artifacts visible in the basement of the church. The frieze is located in the space of the apse and the text of the inscription, which are preserved only words "Introibo ad altare Dei", is a usual formula of strips in running dogs that formerly adorned the altar or the different parts of the ciborium. The history of this building, and of our parish community, start from this entry and from the foundation stone of the basilica, where it is engraved with a simple, basic but charming cross. The history of a community and of a Divine Plan that takes place 3,000 years. God acts in human history and the community of today is the result of this action continued and loyal over time and how men have met, lived and represented in their existence. In this sense, then, our church in Orvieto is not only an extraordinary and unique monument built of stones, but it is also a continuous passage of testimony and faith among men. At the same time, it is also a call to individual responsibility to live their faith within a community, to preserve the memory of the faith of those who lived and walked the same places and to transmit this message to the generations that face. You are welcome! « less
