Within the volcano's crater is a tourquoise-blue lake recognized as perhaps the most highly-acidic lake in the world. Within the Ijen caldera are numerous active vents spewing noxious sulfur fumes. Blue flames emanate from these vents when the sulphiric gases ignite, also known as the Blue Fire phenomenon. It is a 2-hour hike from the base to the peak of the volcano. Gas masks are necessary for the descent into the crater, due to the sulphuric fumes. « less
