Molen is Norway's largest beach of rolling stones, and it is a part of Vestfoldraet: the terrain left behind after the end of the most recent Ice Age 10.000 years ago. The cultural landscape of Molen, with its total of 230 cairns from the Iron Age, is one of the most majestic in Norway. The area has 16 large cairns, many up to 35 meters in diameter, with almost 200 small cairns in rows parallel to the shoreline. The cairns probably served as sea markers along the shipping lanes between different trading centres. This, combined with its striking natural beauty and position on the edge of the sea, makes it a must-see when visiting the area. You can enjoy a lovely view out to sea here and also study the beautiful species of stone called larvikite, a speciality for the Larvik area. Actually there are more than 100 different species of rock at Molen, and a total of 316 different bird species has also been found. The arrival and departure of the migratory birds is a real spectacle. Twice a year the migrants visit wonderful Molen, heading north in spring and eventually heading back south in autumn. In the summer of 2008 Molen was officially made into an UNESCO Geopark Area. If you want to get to Molen by manual means, the coastal path is easily accessible from either Helgeroa or Nevlunghavn.      « less

He grew up in Kirkestredet 9, in a house that today is beutifully restored with some wonderful baroque decoration from the 1700s. Colin Archer had Scottish parents, but was born in Larvik. He grew up in one of the oldest houses in Larvik. His fully restored childhood home in Kirkestredet at Tollerodden was built in 1668. It is one of the oldest houses in town, and it is uniquely situated by the Larvik fiord. Some of the most valuable antiquarian buildings are situated on the property, and in the main building you will find some rare 300-year old baroque decoration.  In summer you can enjoy a cup of tea at the cafe outside the main building, and there are also concerts in the front garden in the summer season. The 343-year old house earned the Larvik city council preservation prize in 2007. During the 1850s Colin Archer and his wife built Lilleodden at Kirkestredet 11, next door to his childhood home. Here Archer developed his ideas and designed his boats. Colin Archer is well known for constructing the vessel Fram, and for his rescue ships. He was responsible for building 14 rescue ships and, all in all, more than 200 boats.    « less

The church can seat 260 people, and celebrated its first 950 years in 2010. The Roman-style stone church is mentioned in writing as early as the year 1080. It was recognized as one of six main churches in the ancient Viken county. Over the centuries the church has gone through some major changes, but the original nave with its characteristical crooked ground plan has primarily been kept as it was. A bell from the 1100s is today the oldest relic inside the church, while the impressive renaissance interior can be dated to the late 16th century.  Also worth mentioning is the fact that there are several old gravestones masoned to the church floor here. « less

A monument of Ulabrand is raised at the point where local pilots had their observation post. Ulabrand is regarded as Norway's best known sea pilot ever. He worked as a pilot at Ula from approximately 1850 until he lost his life during an autumn storm in 1881. At the end of the 19th century the pilots themselves had to hail boats and ships that were in need of a pilot. Wages were given to the man who came first to rescue after the first come, first served principle. The pilot then led the ship safely until it arrived in port. Consequently, pilots had observation posts where they easily could spot ships on their way in the Oslo fiord because of the magnificent view. There was fierce competition man to man on being first to help at the ship's side. The pilots often risked their own lives, and Ulabrand was probably the roughest and toughest of the lot. The pilots brought many ships and lots of sailors to safety during Skagerrak storms. Ulabrand himself became a symbol of strong seamanship, but he was first and foremost an important symbol of all the hard work the pilots went through to make shipping more secure. « less

Models, pictures of ships and artifacts tell Larvik's maritime story, of sail, whaling, and modern shipping. A separate section about Colin Archer shows his effort as a ship builder for several ship owners. Fridtjof Nansen's polar ship Fram is world famous. There is also a section devoted to Larvik born Thor Heyerdahl. The Kaupang Exhibition Where Roads Meet In May 2000 an exhibition about Skiringssalkaupang will open in the maritime museum. It is the Viking trading post at Kaupang in Tjolling that will again come to light when Oslo University starts a new excavation at Kaupang. Both content and presentation will be developed in cooperation with the Kaupang excavation. The exhibition presents both localisation problems and the story of the excavation through almost 150 years. There were great excavations at Kaupang from 1950 until 1967. Finds from the graves and town area at the west side of Kaupang have led us to refer to Kaupang as Norway's first town. Kaupang's place in our cultural landscape and it's influence around the North Sea and Baltic Sea are the main themes of the exhibition. Original finds from Kaupang will be on loan from the University's collection of ancient artifacts and will be exhibited locally for the first time since 1953. Together with original artifacts, maps, pictures and a model of the five houses that have already been excavated in the township area of Kaupang, the goal is to show how life was likely to have been in and around Kaupang at one time. « less

It is a worthy representative for all rococo churches in our country.  Fredriksvern shipyard and naval base was established in 1750, and the garrison church was established and then inaugurated six years later. The church was built in rococo style from Dutch brickwork, and it has glazed, dark blue tiles. Salt from the bricks eventually damaged the walls, and because of this exterior and interior walls were whitewashed. In the 1880s the church was rejuvenated, and the genuine colours of red and yellow were reinforced. As the only place of worship in town, the floor in Fredriksvern church is formed as a cross. The church also still has the two-storey altarpiece it got to the inauguration in 1756. There is a hipped end roof in the church. Above the main entrance the monogram of king Fredrik V. shines in typical rococo style, and in addition the mechanical clockwork from 1756 that the church vicar still winds up twice a week.       « less
