Melk Attractions: What to do & Places to Visit in Melk
"We visited this Abbey as part of our recent cruise on the Danube River. It is amazing!!! It has a hallway that is VERY long. There is a terrace that has wonderful views of the city and the river below. The library is unbelievable!!!! Loved the church as well. This is well worth your time."
"We visited Melk Abbey as a side trip from Vienna. Just catch a train from Vienna and walk up to the abbey in 10-15 minutes. You're going uphill, but it's not a workout type of climb. We arrived at 9 AM and paid for our admission, including the tour in English, which was to begin at 10:55. "National Geographic Traveler Magazine is alleged to have stated that Melk Abbey is among the "best" historic sites in the world. If true, I concur. I have been to religious sites in many countries but few equal this in historic value, intrinsic beauty, and faithful commitment to one's religious be..."liefs. The abbey is a functioning Benedictine monastery on UNESCO's World Heritage list. It is over 1,000 years old but proudly projects a magnificent, gilded Baroque exterior, culminating in a church that is a match for the Vatican in artistic beauty and design. An excellent museum, focussing heavily on jewel-encrusted religious relics and pastoral tools, occupies a wing of the abbey once regularly used as a traveling waystop for members of the Hapsburg dynasty. Another don't miss included in the price of admission is an overview of the city and abbey gardens from atop the requisite museum shop at the entrance/exit to the compound.
