Castle Kuernriger (Schloß Kürnriger) is the main attraction of Durnstein (Dürnstein). It is the ruins of the castle in which Richard Leoncoeur, King of England was held prisoner for a year while returning from a Crusade. The ransom was used by the Duke of Babenberg to build the city walls of Vienna. This is a popular historical attraction especially for British people.

"As King Richard the Lionheart is part of my family history I was very keen to visit Keunringer Castle. I took the shorter rough climb to the top and took small breaks to take photo's and also catch my breath. Once reaching the top and the ruins you are rewarded with the most beautiful views over t..."he river and valley. There is an information table within the ruins telling the story of King Richard and his imprisonment which was interesting.

"Well visible castle ruin with its walls peaking to the sky, you should not miss the view from the very top. Wachau valley will open in front of you with great view of Göttweig Abbey, world famous baroque blue tower right beneath you along with slopes bearing one of the best white wines in the world...." And one can try to imagine what Richard the Lionheart was thinking while being kept here on his way back home..
Take some water with you, as it is a bit of a walk and summer can be pretty hot.
If you are on bikes, you can leave few of them just down in town where the shorter steep path starts and take off from there plus have a look at the nearby cemetery, there is a small church with some bones on display at the basement j:)

"Beware: the walk uphill to the ruins is hard, steep, takes 30-40 min. and the castle is completely ruined. But - Richard the Lion Heart really WAS imprisoned there, the legend about his minstrel is nice and the views of Danube from the top are magnificent. So - read all about it in advance on the In..."ternet, skip all the info signs and enjoy the views and historic atmosphere! The walk in the town of Durnstein should be nice too, with caffees and souvenirs.
