"Most travelers to this area are familiar with the lovely trails between the five towns of Cinque Terre, and they are certainly worth hiking because of their beautiful views and the interesting stops in each of the towns. However, a much less traveled trail extends from the northwestern end of Monter..."osso, just inland of the Il Gigante sculpture, over a substantial high ridge to the larger city of Levanto. The trail, which appears to be a numbered national trail (#10) marked by the same red and white bars as the rest of the Cinque Terre trails is a good one, well maintained and easily hiked, although longer than any of those between the Cinque Terre towns. As a bonus, one can visit an abandoned very old monastery at the apex of the ridge, shortly before the trail begins to descent toward Levanto. "We have known and loved the Cinque Terre for many years now.
Hiking these terraced trails is - or was - one of the most beautiful
trail experiences in Europe. But since the terrible floods of 2011 a
lot of these trails are closed (May 2013) so the open ones are now
so crowded that the hiking experi..."ence resembles more an army route
march. Abandoning the cliff terraces we found a wonderful choice of
well marked paths inland and further North, using the wonderful train
services the coast has many wonderful paths to explore. Levanto to
Buonsolo has two choices: the flat old railroad line (great for bikes!)along the
coast or the over the hills route. We hope the flood damage will soon be fixed.

Bring your good walking shoes and take the time to walk from one village to another, through the vineyard..."s. This National Park is a must-see, but avoid the tourist high-season as it must be miserable. We visited in early May, and the trains between the towns were full, cafes and restaurants were full at lunch...
