A really impressive cathedral. In addition to the beautiful architecture, the relics, I was also impressed by the interesting history of this Cathedral as told through the audio guide..

… and 3 km back again.

You’ll end up in beautiful surroundings with great views over Oviedo city. 100 metres away is another historical site, Iglesia de Santa María del Naranco. Both buildings are pretty seen from the outside, but the top attraction is the walk up here and the views.

The following is a quote from Wikipedia:

“San Miguel de Lillo is a Roman Catholic church built on the Naranco mount, near the Church of Santa María del Naranco in Asturias. It was completed in 842 and it was consecrated by Ramiro I of Asturias and his wife Paterna in the year 848. It was originally dedicated to St. Mary until this worship passed to the nearby palace in the 12th century, leaving this church dedicated to Saint Michael.”

We were visiting Oviedo and had felt rather put out at being asked to pay 6Euros to visit the cathedral but, walking around the corner, found this beautiful church, free, open and welcoming visitors provided you didn't go in whilst worship was taking place.

Squeezed between a museum and a monastery and opposite buildings of the university, it really would be quite easy to miss as the outside is quite unprepossessing. A plain door leads you into a vestibule, up a few steps and through internal glass doors and you are treated to a lovely, light, high ceilinged space.

The church is quite simple, yes there are the gilded side altars and statues around, but also much open and plain space and this is a quiet, reflective space.

Bowls of sand invite you to light a candle and push it into the sand.

Instead of an elaborate altarpiece there is a tryptych painting, very beautiful.

All in all a lovely place to spend some quiet time.

The Santa María la Real de la Corte Church has been at this location since the 16th century. The church follows the model of the monastic churches of the 16th century, with a single, wide nave and side chapels-niches, arranged between the buttresses. The only exception to this design is the Neo-Romanesque architecture, as well as many elements of Classicism adorning the columns, architraves and entablature. There are also interesting elements of Byzantine Romanesque architecture with an image of the Pantokrator still evident/

The most notable element of the church is possibly the main altarpiece in the Mannerist style, depicting Saint Scholastica and Saint Benedict. The church building interestingly shares its walls with the cloister and building of the San Vicente Monastery, and with the Benedictine Monastery of San Pelayo.
