The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Bayeux is an impressive building, a mix of Romanesque in the 11th century crypt and glorious Gothic in the 13th-century nave. In the 11th century after the Conquest of England by Duke William of Normandy in 1066, ties with England were strong. You'll see a reference to the turbulent past above the south transept portal where sculpted scenes show the life of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on the orders of King Henry II of England. The Bayeux Tapestry was kept here from the 11th to the 18th centuries, probably displayed for the first time on the day the cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

"Loved seeing the history in the art form of a tapestry. knew nothing about it til my son who was travelling with me said this was a must see. Loved the audio and did it twice. It was not really crowded but people tend to congregate at certain places and you miss things."
"This was my first experience in France with a Cathedral and it was the first thing I saw as I came into Bayeux. Walked all around it in the evening and went back the next day to go inside. Ate lunch right under it-fantastic."
"WHen we first walked up on the museum, I really had no desire to go in. I had no idea what it was but I went along wiht the rest of my group. Boy am I glad I did!! One of my best memories from my trip to France. You get a recording in a language of your choosing as you view the Tapestry. A story em..."broderied on a cloth around the 11th century, telling of the Norman Conquest of England leading up to the Battle of Hastings. What a great story. And the man that narrated the english version as least was great. Such detail woven into this fabric. I found myself wshing I could go back and listen again. An absolute must do if you are in Normandy and in the Bayeux area.
